F is for...Folksy Friday!

Welcome to my 'F' week - I can finally type the words "F is for Folksy Friday"! Hurray!

This week I have been recovering from the Moonwalk which took place here in Edinburgh on Saturday night. Kicking off at midnight, thousands of us walked the 26.2 miles around the city in aid of raising money for breast cancer charities. And what a challenge! You may remember my ramblings last week about the 18-mile training walk being tough, well I have to say - I'm glad I had that under my belt. From mile 20 onwards I was counting down the miles, but thankfully I knew that the pain was coming and could prepare myself! Here's a quick photie I took with my phone when the sun came up (yes, that's right - I saw SUNRISE...that's not happened in a long time!) at about mile 14.


Thanks to my exertions I've been hobbling around all week. Finally, here we are on Friday and I feel almost back to normal. If it was easy it wouldn't be a challenge after all!

Mr O and I are off up t'north tomorrow morning, the start of a full week off work. On Sunday he'll be running the 28-mile Lairig Ghru hill race and I...won't be. I'm not that crazy. Then we'll have a few days up and about the Cairngorms camping and, weather permitting, I'll finally get some collage photos taken of all that beautiful scenery. Can't wait!

E is for...Ey up it's Folksy Friday!

Welcome my week of all things E...

Tomorrow night, at midnight, I will be joining thousands of other women (and a handful of blokes) to partake in the awesome Moonwalk in Edinburgh. The nerves are really starting to kick in and those all important questions are swimming round my head - can I really walk a marathon? What if I get blisters early on? What's the weather going to do? And of course the all important question - How many Jelly Babies can I fit into one little bumbag?

As part of my 'training' (I use the term loosely - flat moving and illness put paid to my good intentions of sticking to a training plan weeks and weeks ago) Mr O and I set out on an 18-mile walk around Edinburgh last Sunday. I have to admit - it was TOUGH... I may not be the fittest person by any means, but I have done the odd half marathon in my time so I'm not naive in the ways of the aching body, but oooft! I've never been so sore! My hips and calves were killing me, not to mention my feet by the end of it. But I did it! Which means *fingers crossed* the adrenaline and atmosphere on the night will carry me round the full 26.2 miles.

Never one to miss an opportunity, I chose our 18-mile route to take in those elusive streetnames on t'other side of town that I've not yet had chance to get, and which include the wonderfully 'E' themed Eva Place. I also got Oswald Road, Jordan Lane and Cluny Drive too!

D is for...'D' things on a Folksy Friday!

I'm writing this Folksy Friday blog post on a Tuesday - very naughty of me I know, but needs must as I'll be hitting the 'post' button from the Isle of Arran where I'm expecting I'll have not time to get to a computer (thank you iPhone in advance)! That's one nice perk about my day job - getting to see some lovely places in the summer when the Orchestra does it's annual trip around towns in Scotland. It's luck of the draw that I get to go to the beautiful Whiting Bay on Friday (today!).

But it's not an 'A' for Arran week, it's a 'D' for Delightful week, or should that be Dreich, seeing as the weather finally took that turn back to cold and rain? It has been a delightful time though - with the wedding of a close school friend on Saturday night in Sheffield, getting to see family at the weekend in the Peak District and cheering on Mr O as he ran the Buxton Half Marathon, it's been lovely.

We've also finally got most of the unpacking done! Hurray! Just 2 boxes to go...

C is for...Crikey it's Folksy Friday again already!

It's a shame it's not a 'B' week again as the past 7 days have been BUSY! Mr O and I moved flat on Monday and spent Tuesday chained to our phones as we rang the numerous companies who needed to know our new address... I suppose this week's 'C' theme could be dedicated to Cardboard, as we have a lot of it in the flat in the way of boxes. It could be for CAREFUL! as we unpacked all those fragile household items. Or it could be for Cripes! we've got a lot of stuff!

Of course the big 'C' needs to be for Collages. Way back in 2006 Mr O and I took a trip over the pond to visit close friends in NYC and what a trip it was! My poor camera never had a chance to relax as I snapped away at all those famous sights. As we packed our days visiting neighbourhood after neighbourhood we eventually found ourselves wandering across the wonderful Brooklyn Bridge, discovering that classic view of the Manhattan skyline which, unless you stand really far away, just won't fit into one picture. So I took 20. I started at the left and finished at the right and by the end of it I had everything captured from the Statue of Liberty to the Chrysler Building.

On our return to Edinburgh I printed out the photos, cut them all up and pieced them together again into my very first collage.

Since then I've made quite a few (as you'll perhaps have seen at www.jenowensimages.com). I can't really pick a favourite as there's parts of them all that I like. But seeing as we're on a 'C' week, and as it's been such a big week for Changes, here's the biggest collage I've made, following our trip to Cambodia in 2008...

B is for...


Happy Folksy Friday once again!

In keeping with my alphabet theme, this week's letter 'B' gives me the perfect opportunity to show off perhaps THE best streetname I have found so far. Yes, that's right, please welcome BATMAN Street.

When Mr O and I arrived in Melbourne back in August 2008, the whole 'streetnames on cards' idea was a fresh concept, it being born mere weeks before whilst travelling up the east coast of Australia. I've mentioned before about the sheer volume of names to be found on signs in Melbourne, but I never thought we'd be lucky enough to visit Batman Street. It may help you to garner enthusiasm and understanding to explain that for some time now, Mr O is of the belief that he is, in fact, Batman. This is thanks to a 'dream' he had...I humour him, what more can I do?...so for us to visit this place, nay, this shrine was quite a find.

A is for... A Folksy Friday blog post!

It's disgraceful how long it's been since I last posted on the blog. Do not fear however, as I have a cunning plan - I will be teaming up the alphabet and Folksy Friday to keep me on track and post a new blog EVERY WEEK. Well, at least for the next 26 weeks! I haven't had chance to take part in the wonderful world of Folksy Friday thanks to the busy-ness that is the day job. Which is why this post has been in the pipeline for the past few days and now I can finally post it, it being Friday and all...

So, with my alphabet theme I'll be keeping you up-to-date with which collages are a-happening and which streetnames are now on The List. Starting with 'A' this week, I'll also be delving into the various Folksy shops to show you some of my favourite items. If I try harder, they might give me a spot on Sesame Street...
